Reading my Rights

The question, "What are you studying?" is really starting to sink into the deeper layers of my flesh.  The first few times I read through this weeks devotional, I read over these words without a second glance.  My response was simply "I am studying dance, the human body, and God through them both."  And then after the 3rd or 4th time through I stopped a the question and really began to allow the question to wash over me.  And man oh man, do I study a whole lot more than that!  It is a question I will be thinking about and sitting in for a while before I can respond anymore.

As a direct result of spending time on this first question, I then began to sit in and ponder on the next question, "What rights am I demanding for myself that I don't have as a slave of Christ Jesus.?"  Let me tell you, I take advantage of a TON of rights that do not belong to me.  I think I have rights because I follow and love Jesus, and then I look to his life and suddenly my head drops and I am astonished at my own foolishness.  Jesus gave up all rights to be a man encased in flesh, then lived his whole life stooping lower, serving others, talking to the "unworthy", and paid my bride-price by surrendering his own life to wood, nails, and mockery.  And who am I to think I have rights in this life?!

But then the joy washed over me, I have rights spelled out in the love covenant from my creator in the bible.  They are different rights than I assume in the earthly sense.  But I am love, worth, set free, a child of God, forgiven....insert ALL "I am" statements and the wonderful love spelled out in the stories of Yahweh's interactions with his chosen people in the bible and there you go!  The truth, biblical truth sets me free into the rights which were allotted to ME, and YOU, at the creation of the world!  Oh happy day!

"Jesus made it unmistakably clear that the knowledge of the truth will not set us free, "You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." John 8:32  Good feelings will not free us.  Ecstatic experiences will not free us.  Getting "high on Jesus" will not free us.  Without a knowledge of the truth, we will not be free."
