Meditation.

Meditation is the practice of ruminating on God's word. The word ruminate at its Latin root means "to chew over". When we meditate on scripture, we are to do this just like cows ruminate on grass or cud-- in which they constantly chew it over, and over again. In the same way we are to chew scripture on scripture pondering it over and over. While meditating on scripture it is critical that we read it multiple times so that we allow its wisdom and meaning to sink into our souls. In order to accurately understand its meaning we should understand the historical context of the time and the genre where the scripture comes from (commentaries are very helpful for this). By doing so we can draw a fuller understanding of the passage. By meditating on scripture we ultimately allow God to speak. Just like in solitude we are able to slow down our busy lives so we can hear His direction and calling for our lives.
